How to Drive Long Distances

Get Ready for the Long Drive

Driving for hours upon hours on end is no easy feat. For that reason, the first thing you need to do is prepare for the long drive that you'll have ahead. It's imperative that you begin this process early on, so that there will be no surprises on the days leading up to the drive. For a bit of guidance about what you should be doing, read the following list:
  • Your body and mind are going to go through a lot to get you where you need to go. If you want to get there safely, you will first need to sleep and eat well. Have good night's sleeps and healthy, balanced meals so that you can endure the harsh hours behind the wheel without as much problem.
  • Needless to say, if you want to go somewhere, then you should be aware of how to get there. See the alternative routes available to you and choose one that makes the most sense to you. If possible, choose the route that's the shortest.
  • And since you're preparing to go on a long drive, you should also be made aware of what the weather will be like. Having a notion of the conditions outside will allow you to prepare more effectively for them.
  • Of course, you will need to pack certain items to make your long drive bearable, entertaining, and possible. For example, a few of such items could be: a change of clothing, toiletries, snacks, water bottles, and music, an audiobook, or other.
  • You will be sitting in one place for a few hours at a time. Unless you want to feel rigid, tight, and less effective, you will need to dress comfortably. This can make your drive much easier.
  • The last way to prepare yourself for the drive, would be to leave with plenty of time. If you're not stressed to get to your destination, you're far more likely to get there in a safe manner.

Prepare Your Vehicle for the Journey

You aren't the only one that needs to prepare to withstand the long hours on the road. Your vehicle also needs to be fully taken care of before you leave. That's why, it is incredibly important that you stop by the mechanic on the days leading up to the big drive. If you don't, something could malfunction and you could end up stranded (or worse) on the side of the road. Have it inspected to guarantee all works well.

Drive Safely

This should be the most obvious tip ever, but it still needs to be mentioned (just in case there's someone out there that doesn't know): you should drive safely. Yes, driving can turn out to be monotonous and boring. Yes, you may know the road like the back of your hand. But even if those are the cases, you should do your best effort so you can arrive safely. This includes paying attention and following traffic signs, driving defensively and remaining focused while you drive. If you have trouble with any of these, either find some way to remedy that, or pass on the wheel to someone else, so you don't put yourself and others in peril.

Stop When Needed

Last but certainly not least, you should remember to stop whenever you feel like you need it. Driving while tired or sleepy can be one of the most dangerous things you can do, as it can result in messy and even fatal car wrecks. Be advised that if you think you can go a while longer with the help of caffeine or sugar, that their effects can wear off soon and leave you feeling even more exhausted and at risk that you were before. The best thing you can do in those cases, is stop somewhere safe to rest up. It's also highly suggested that you take short breaks as you drive to stretch your legs and keep your mind and body awake.
